Chapter 2: The Union of the Churches
Will every Protestant denomination in America enter into the coming union of the churches? "When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman heirarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result"(GC 445).Upon what basis will the Protestant churches eventually unite? "The wide diversity of belief in the Protestant churches is regarded by many as decisive proof that no effort to secure a forced uniformity can ever be made. But there has been for years, in churches of the Protestant faith, a strong and growing sentiment in favor of a union based upon common points of doctrine. To secure such a union, the discussion of subjects upon which all were not agreed--however important they might be from a Bible standpoint--must necessarily be waived. (ibid. 444).What are the two principal erroneous doctrines held in common by the churches? "Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome" (ibid. 588).Will Protestantism eventually reunite with Catholicism? "The Word of God teaches that these scenes [suppression of the Sabbath] are to be repeated as Roman Catholics and Protestants shall unite for the exaltation of the Sunday" (ibid. 578). "How the Roman church can clear herself from the charge of idolatry we cannot see....And this is the religion which Protestants are beginning to look upon with so much favor, and which will eventually be united with Protestantism" (RH June 1, 1886).Will there be organizational unity or unity of action? "Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts" (GC 616).
